This mutation occurs in a gene called the RET proto-oncogene. It accounts for 3% to 10% of thyroid cancers. MTC cells usually produce calcitonin and/or carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA). These proteins can be measured in the blood and used to monitor the response to treatment.
